"No Reduction - No Fee"

The Greatest 'Rip-Off' by Lawyers in Australia is he Six Minute Minimum Time Unit Charge Clause (SMMU) by these Despicable Lawyers.
minute does not equal minutes

7 minutes does not equal 12 minutes

It never has and never will!

Some lawyers however, think it does.

Where does the other minutes go?

Some lawyers insert into your costs agreement a clause "We charge on a proportion time a minimum six minute unit

Lawyers do not like disclosing how they are going to charge you.

Many lawyers charge you an hourly rate of say $450.00 per hour (resulting in an 8 hour day of $3,600.00 or $18,000.00 per week!) and then have a term in the disclosure agreement that they charge a minimum 6 minute time unit and round-up the time up to the nearest unit. The rounding-up is always at the discretion of the lawyer and results in a potential hourly rate of up to six times the agreed hourly rate!

Most importantly, the client does not realise this until they receive bills and often it is too late to change the costs agreement. Sadly, when the costs agreement is signed by the client there is a real imbalance in the information standing of the lawyer and the client. The lawyer has all the knowledge of a matter and the likely progress and outcome of a matter and the inexperienced and stressed client has none. Yet, due to the fiduciary nature of their relationship this should never occur.

Q. How Lawyers Abuse the Six Minute Minimum Time Units?
KATE'S TOP TWO TIPS TO SAVE, REDUCE AND GET A REFUND OF YOUR EXCESSIVE OVERCHARGED LEGAL FEES

The Text of my Video is:
The "Six Minute Minimum Time Unit" clause looks on its surface innocent enough.

But some, if not all Lawyers will charge you under this clause - a 3 minute telephone call at 6 minutes; and a 7 minute call at 12 minutes;

resulting in you being charged double or even tripled the Lawyer's hourly rate from $500 per hour to $1,000 or even worse, the rate goes sky high to $2,000 per hour and this can cost you thousands of dollars in excessive legal fees over the life of your case.

Some Lawyers will even charge you a 15 second phone call at a minimum of 6 minutes!!!

So my 1st Tip to Save and Reduce your Excessive Legal Fees is:

Do not agree to the Six Minute Minimum Time Unit clause in the Costs Agreement with your Lawyer.

If it is already in your Costs Agreement - insist it ibe now DELETED.

What really disturbs me is the fact that the excessive legal fees and overcharging by some Lawyers comes out of the compensation victims of accidents like Adam, are entitled to and in the cases of Divorce, out of the family's budget for the parent's children.

It is just despicable what some of these Lawyers do!
The One Line Tax Invoice

Compensation Lawyers
TAX INVOICE

Professional Fees        Net                GST            Gross

But say...                    $50,000        $5,000        $55,000

The 'One Line' Tax Invoice from Adam's Lawyer is absolutely pathetic, but not unusual for some Lawyers to do this!

I mean, these days you go to Coles and buy 3 items worth $31.50, you get more of a receipt than you do from some Lawyers charging you over $50,000 in legal fees.

It is really unbelievable and disgusting?

I mean, these days with everything recorded on computers, it should only be a simple matter of pressing 'print' to produce an account that the client can see and check.

So, my 2nd Tip to Save and Reduce your Excessive Legal Fees is:

After your case is finished, get your file and an itemised Bill of Costs from your Lawyer.
